Dos and Don’ts for Frozen Shoulder Patients
In your everyday life, the shoulder is important in performing several
–– if not all activities.
From combing your hair to putting on clothes.
Once the shoulder is painful or restricted by stiffness in the joint, your function becomes
severely affected.
For this reason, if you have frozen shoulder, it is time to learn what
to do and what to avoid in order to maximise your function and reverse
limitation.
How to cure frozen shoulder quickly?
The first step in getting rid of the frozen
shoulder is to get it properly diagnosed.
If you are at risk of developing frozen
shoulder due to:
- -
Immobility
- -
Previous injury
- -
Diabetes
- -
Previous stroke
- -
recent surgery
It is important to get your shoulder
assessed by a clinician to find out if you have a frozen shoulder.
If you are diagnosed with frozen shoulder,
here are the most important frozen shoulder Do’s and Don’ts.
Frozen Shoulder Do’s
To improve your shoulder mobility, reduce
limitation and prevent stiffness of the joint here are some tips to follow:
-
Reach Up
When your shoulder hurts, you may tend to
keep it at the side and try to avoid movements.
However, this is not always the right thing
to do.
Instead, try to keep using your arm
especially in overhead activities (e.g., putting a book on a high shelf,
combing hair and wearing a hat) to regain the range of movement and prevent
further restriction (this must be assessment based).
-
Correct your
posture
Once a body part is affected, the rest of
the body tries to compensate by changing different body parts’ alignment.
This is why it is important to maintain your
body in good alignment and include postural correction exercises in your
exercise plan.
-
Start Your Rehab
Immediately
Once you are diagnosed with frozen shoulder,
do not postpone your rehab.
Early rehab can help you:
·
avoid shoulder stiffness
·
maximise your function
· Restore your range of movement
Frozen Shoulder Don’ts
Frozen shoulder don’ts is just as important
as frozen shoulder Do’s.
Here is what “NOT” to do:
· Don’t Neglect Your Arm
Neglecting your arm will lead to more
limitation, stiffness and joint adhesions.
It might be painful to use your affected
arm, especially while performing specific movements that involve rotating or
lifting the arm above your head.
However, it is still crucial to use the arm
as much as possible during your daily activity and within the pain limits.
·
Don’t Push beyond the limit
Although mobilising your arm will improve
your flexibility, range of motion and function, it is also important to stretch
and mobilise within the safe pain-free range to avoid tissue damage and
inflammation which can eventually lead to more scarring and tissue adhesions
·
Don’t Rush for the results
Frozen shoulder does not improve overnight;
it requires a consistent rehabilitation programme to improve the function and
increase the joint range of movement.
So, as your rehabilitation programme
progresses, be patient, follow instructions, commit to your home programme and
do not ne in hurry to see the results.
